People in Shanghai and Suzhou can now commute by subway with the Metro Line 11 connection officially put into operation on Saturday. It is another step for closer links to realize further integrated development of the Yangtze River Delta.

Suzhou"s new metro Line 11, connects downtown Suzhou with Shanghai, was put into operation on Saturday.

With a total length of 41.25 kilometers, Line 11 runs between Weiting Station at Suzhou Industrial Park and Huaqiao Station in the Suzhou-administered county-level city of Kunshan.

With 28 stations, travelers can transfer to Subway Line 3 at Weiting Station and to Shanghai"s Subway Line 11 at Huaqiao Station, according to the Suzhou government.

“Suzhou Rail Transit Line 11 now has the highest level of fully automatic driving technology. Our train can already achieve fully automatic wake-up and automatic departure in the morning, including automatic door opening and closing upon arrival at the station, with a time accuracy of seconds. At night, after the train stops operation, it can rely on intelligent technology to automatically return to the depot. In the future, the functions will also become increasingly intelligent”, Gu Jiacheng, Captain of Main Line Division of Line 11 of Suzhou Rail Transit Operation Co., Ltd., said.

Passengers paying with nationwide transport cards or buying tickets at the vending machine will have to go out of the turnstile gate and get into the platform again.

“The opening of the subway makes me feel like it"s not like traveling from one city to another. For example, the convenience of traveling from Wuzhong District to the High-tech Zone in Suzhou makes people closer psychologically and geographically”, a passenger said.

“An integrated transportation system can promote the exchange of people and information flow between different places, making our communication increasingly close and various exchanges more frequent. We can have more opportunities for integration, find more opportunities for cooperation and development, and potentially explore more new growth points in industry integration and innovation integration”, Chen Wen, Chairman of Board of Directors, Jiangsu Suke Innovation Strategy Research Institute, said.
